If you're about to start your first job in India, there's a government scheme that could put up to βΉ15,000 directly in your bank account β just for being a first-time employee. It's called the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY), and a lot of students and freshers haven't heard of it yet. Here's everything you need to know, in plain language.
What is PM-VBRY?
PM-VBRY is a flagship employment-linked incentive scheme launched by the Government of India, implemented by the Ministry of Labour & Employment through the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). It's designed to do two things at once: encourage employers to create new formal jobs, and put money directly into the pockets of people taking their first job.
The scheme runs from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2027, with a total outlay of roughly βΉ99,446 crore, and a target of supporting the creation of over 3.5 crore jobs β of which around 1.92 crore are expected to be first-time entrants into the workforce.
What's in it for you (Part A β Employee Benefit)
If you're a first-time employee, here's what you can receive:
- An incentive equal to one month's EPF wage, up to a maximum of βΉ15,000
- Paid in two instalments β the first after you complete 6 months of continuous service, the second after 12 months, provided you've also completed a mandatory Financial Literacy module
- Money is transferred directly to your Aadhaar-linked bank account (DBT β Direct Benefit Transfer)
Are you eligible?
- You must never have been a member of EPFO or any exempted provident fund trust before 1 August 2025
- You must join an EPFO-registered establishment between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2027
- You need an Aadhaar-authenticated UAN (Universal Account Number), generated via face authentication on the UMANG app
- Your gross monthly wage must be below βΉ1,00,000
- You must stay with the same employer for at least 6 months to receive the first instalment
What employers get (Part B)
Employers who create new jobs beyond their existing headcount can receive a monthly incentive too β between βΉ1,000 and βΉ3,000 per new employee, depending on the employee's wage band, for up to two years. This is part of why the scheme is designed to benefit both sides of the hiring equation, not just job seekers.
How to apply
- Check with your employer first β if they're EPFO-registered, you may be automatically eligible once your UAN is generated
- Download the UMANG app from the Play Store or App Store
- Generate or verify your UAN using Aadhaar-based face authentication
- Search for "PMVBRY" within the app and complete your registration with your employment and bank details
- Complete the Financial Literacy course before your 12-month mark, to unlock the second instalment
